Mission statement
The mission of INUA Foundation is to improve the well-being, protection, and resilience of vulnerable populations by creating inclusive pathways for sustainable development, social justice, and self-reliance through community-based protection, education, livelihoods, and empowerment programmes.
Organizational Background
INUA Foundation was established in 2018 in response to the compounded humanitarian and development challenges facing East Africa and the Great Lakes region. Protracted armed conflicts in the Great Lakes region, persistent poverty across Eastern Africa, and the continued impact of the HIV pandemic have had severe social, economic, and protection consequences for vulnerable populations. These crises have contributed to forced displacement, weakened livelihoods, disrupted access to education and health services, and heightened risks of exploitation, exclusion, and gender-based violence.
The impacts of these challenges are disproportionately borne by refugees, vulnerable children, women and girls, and persons with disabilities, who often face systemic barriers to accessing essential services, decent economic opportunities, and protection mechanisms. Structural inequalities and limited social safety nets further undermine their ability to cope with shocks and to achieve sustainable self-reliance.
INUA Foundation was founded to address these gaps by promoting inclusive, rights-based, and sustainable solutions. The Foundation envisions a society in which all individuals live happy, healthy, confident, and respected lives, with dignity and equal opportunity. Its mission is to improve the lives of vulnerable members of society by creating pathways for sustainable development and social justice through integrated protection and empowerment programmes.
INUA Foundation works across key sectors including livelihoods, education, health, empowerment, research and advocacy, and the prevention of and response to gender-based violence. Through a people-centred, gender-responsive, and evidence-informed approach, the Foundation seeks to strengthen resilience, enhance self-reliance, and contribute to inclusive development outcomes for displacement-affected and marginalized communities across East Africa and the Great Lakes region.
